A Marine Life Sanctuary: Snorkeling at Caño Island

After an exciting speedboat journey from the coast, we will arrive at the Caño Island Biological Reserve, a strictly protected sanctuary. As you dive into its warm, crystal-clear waters, you will enter a vibrant world filled with sea turtles, majestic manta rays, harmless reef sharks (white tips), and massive schools of colorful fish.

We will conduct two immersions at different points of the reef to maximize the experience. During the boat trip to and from the island, it is also very common to spot resident dolphins and humpback whales in season. Two tours in one!

What will you experience?

Step aboard our safe vessels and navigate the warm waters of Bahía Ballena. Accompanied by expert local guides, we will set out in search of the majestic humpback whales that visit our coasts to have their calves, as well as playful pods of resident dolphins.

During the tour, we will also pass by the iconic caves of Playa Ventanas (tide permitting) and skirt the famous Whale Tail rock formation. It is an immersive experience designed to create lifelong memories.

Full day (Departure at 7:00 AM).

Easy to Intermediate (Swimming skills recommended).

What to bring?

  • 🎒 Host tip: Take a motion sickness pill 30 minutes before boarding the boat in the morning. Once at sea, the pill takes much longer to take effect.

Itinerary:

  • 07:00 AM: Speedboat departure (from Uvita or Sierpe, depending on the operator).

  • 08:30 AM – 9:00 AM: Arrival at the island and first snorkeling session (approx. 45 min).

  • 10:30 AM: Break on the boat or the island beach for hydration.

  • 11:30 AM: Second session at a different point on the reef.

  • 01:00 PM: Picnic-style lunch and return trip to the coast.
